133. Slavery in Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

ABSTRACT

This research is focused on analyzing slavery in Mark Twain’s The adventures of Huckleberry Finn. This research purposes to get descriptive knowledge about the slavery experienced by Jim and the real condition of slaveryas reflected in the novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. The researcher uses sociological approach in literary. It is sociological criticism approach in literary criticism because the term literary is applied to the analysis, interpretation and evaluation of a literary work. The result of this study shows that as a slave Jim experiences physical suffering, fear, guilt, and racism that change all his life in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.

He always gets physical suffering from his surrounding such as from Miss Watson, as well as his status as a slave and black person. She always treats Jim roughly but he cannot do anything. When Jim hears Miss Watson’s conversation with Widow Douglass about their plan to sell Jim, he feels disappointed and somehow fears start to occur in Jim. Both disappointment and fear that Jim experiences because of Miss Watson’s
decision to sell him, make Jim decides to run away and not to believe white people anymore. As a slave Jim struggles to be free. The research shows the real circumstances in America at that time which is the slavery is one of the social problems faced by the American, after we have reading the history of America and compare with the story of the novel by Mark Twain the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn it’s made the researcher really sure that America is the country which has many social problems such as: slavery, racial discrimination, and divide the people into Black’s and White’s.
